TAKE A PRIVATE STUDIO CLASS

The Metal Museum offers private classes in metals, blacksmithing, and casting. During these short two-hour sessions, students will learn the basics of the materials, techniques, and safety guidelines for their chosen medium and complete a project using their knowledge.

SMALL METALS

Small enameled vegetable cutouts.

INTRO TO ENAMELING

 

Learn how artists add colorful designs to metal with powdered glass. During this session,  learn about the nature of enamel, how to prep materials, and the correct operation of a small enameling kiln. You will be able to complete at least one small project and will receive the materials to make objects such as pendants, earrings, or pins.

$300 per session | Up to 4 people

INTRO TO SAWING

​

Participants will learn piercing and finishing techniques by creating wearable works of art. Students will be taught how to use jeweler's saws, files, and a drill press. With their skills, students will create a pendant or pair of earrings from copper and brass.

​

$300 per session | Up to 4 people

INTRO TO RIVETING

​

Participants will learn about making cold connections using rivets. Students will learn how to use a drill press, create rivets with brass and copper wire, and set those rivets using a hammer. This process will be used to create a layered pendant that shows off their new skills.

​

$300 per session | Up to 4 people

BLACKSMITHING

Someone using a hammer and anvil to forge metal.

FORGED STEEL HOOKS

 

Hand-forge a custom hook with assistance from our shop staff. Design your hook, heat up some raw steel, and use traditional blacksmithing techniques to make a beautiful piece of artwork that will last for years.

$300 per session | Up to 2 people

FORGED STEEL SKEWERS

​

Participants will learn how to forge and twist steel to make their own grilling skewers during this class. Expect to leave with 6-10 skewers.

​

CASTING

CAST ALUMINUM LIGHT SWITCH COVERS

 

In this class participants will customize a light switch plate, create a mold with oil bonded green sand, and cast it in aluminum.

WELDING

INTRO TO MIG WELDING

 

In this class participants will create small sculptures from scrap metal after a welding demonstration. This is a four-hour session.

​

$600 per session | Up to 4 people

Call (901) 774-6380 or send us an email at classes@metalmuseum.org to schedule a time for a private class. Students should be 18 years of age to register independently. Students between 15 and 17 may take classes if accompanied by a parent or guardian. All students will need to provide their own ear and eye protection as well as gloves. All other materials are included in the tuition. Members who are Silver or above receive 10% off class tuition. Discounts will be applied prior to processing payment.
